User-Controlled Feeds in 2026: What Changes for Small Business

Feeds are shifting from purely algorithmic to partly user-controlled. What that means for how a small business gets discovered, and what to do about it now.

Short answer: platforms are handing people more control over what they see, through following-only views, custom feeds, topic controls and mute lists. For a small business this cuts both ways. Being deliberately chosen is worth far more than being algorithmically served, but nobody chooses a business that only broadcasts. The work is to become something a person would deliberately keep.

What is actually changing

The last decade moved in one direction: away from chronological feeds of people you follow, toward recommendations chosen for you. That produced enormous reach for a few accounts and a slow decline for everyone else.

The correction that has been building is control returning to the reader:

  • Chronological and following-only views coming back as options
  • Custom and topic feeds people build and subscribe to themselves
  • Better mute, block and “show me less” controls, actually respected
  • Portable, open protocols where the feed is not owned by one company
  • Direct subscriptions, newsletters and broadcast channels growing again

None of this replaces the algorithm. It sits alongside it, and it means a growing share of what people see is what they asked for.

Why this cuts both ways for a small business

The bad news: algorithmic reach was free. If someone had to choose you, most businesses do not survive the choice, because most business accounts are announcements.

The good news: chosen attention is worth far more. A person who deliberately follows a local contractor is closer to hiring one than a hundred people served a video they scrolled past. Follower counts fall, relevance rises.

For a small local business, the second effect is bigger than the first. You were never going to win on reach. You can win on being worth keeping.

What to do about it

Be worth choosing

The test is simple: if this account only appeared when someone deliberately asked for it, would they keep asking?

The answers that pass are consistent. Show real work. Answer real questions. Have a point of view. Be specific about a place. Businesses that pass this test do fine in every feed design because they were never depending on the algorithm.

Build the channels you own

This is the durable version of the same idea. A phone list, an email list, a booking system, a site.

None of these are subject to a feed change. If tomorrow every platform switched to following-only, a business with an owned channel loses nothing.

As feeds fragment, search gets more important rather than less. Someone who needs a plumber does not scroll for one, they search. And that search increasingly happens inside an AI assistant that answers directly.

Both reward the same thing: specific, well-structured content that answers a real question, attached to a real business with consistent details across the web.

Stop measuring reach

Reach was always a proxy. In a partly-chosen feed environment it gets noisier. Count enquiries, booked work, and where new customers say they found you.

What this means for the bilingual market specifically

This is the part most national commentary misses.

Custom and topic feeds are strong in tight-knit communities, and Spanish-speaking local communities organize this way already, through group chats, community pages and direct sharing. A business that communicates well in Spanish is far more likely to be shared into those spaces deliberately.

In a market like Salinas, being genuinely bilingual is not a feature. It is distribution.

Frequently asked questions

Should I stop posting on social?

No. Post less, make each one worth keeping, and stop treating reach as the goal.

Are followers still worth anything?

They are worth more than before, in fewer numbers. A thousand people who chose you beat ten thousand who were shown you.

What is the single most durable investment right now?

A site you own and a Google Business Profile that is correct, complete and reviewed. Neither is subject to a feed redesign.

Does this affect local businesses less than national brands?

Less severely, yes. National brands were living on algorithmic reach. Local businesses were mostly living on search, referrals and community, all of which this strengthens.

The short version

Feeds are becoming partly chosen rather than entirely served. Businesses that were broadcasting into an algorithm will feel that. Businesses that were genuinely worth following will not.

Be worth choosing, own the channel, and stay findable in search. That set of moves has been right for a while, and this makes it more so.
