The map pack is decided by a form. Yours is half empty.
Roughly 32% of map pack ranking weight sits inside your Google Business Profile, and eight of the ten strongest individual factors are fields on it. We fill every one of them properly, once, for $650. Then we can keep the content and reviews compounding for $550 a month.
Deeper than our free instant scan, and still free. No card, no contract.
Profile completeness
The average profile we open
- Primary category Too broad
- Services filled in 0 of 24
- Photos 4, none recent
- Review replies None
- Holiday hours Not set
- Tracked in GA4 Untagged
Illustrative composite of what we typically find, not one business.
of map pack ranking weight sits in the profile itself, the single largest category (Whitespark 2026)
individual ranking factor is your primary category. One field, chosen once, decides a lot (Whitespark 2026)
the jump predefined services made as a ranking factor this year, and almost nobody fills them in (Whitespark 2026)
The real problem
Nothing on your profile is broken. That is exactly why it is losing.
Your listing is claimed, your phone number is right, your hours are roughly correct. It looks fine. It also looks fine to the fourteen other businesses within three miles who did the same amount of work, and the map only shows three of you.
The gap is almost never something dramatic. It is a primary category set to "Contractor" when it should say "Kitchen Remodeler." It is a Services section Google built for you and nobody filled in, which moved from the 81st most important ranking factor to the 22nd this year. It is four photos from 2022, a review backlog with no replies, and holiday hours nobody set, when "open at the time of search" is the fifth strongest factor there is.
None of that is urgent on any given Tuesday, which is why it never gets done. It is also the entire distance between you and the map pack.
Everything that gets optimized
Not 'ongoing optimization' with nothing to point at. This is the whole list, and it is the same list whether you hire us or take it and do it yourself.
Category strategy
We pull the categories your top three competitors rank with, then set the narrowest accurate primary plus the secondaries you genuinely qualify for. This is the highest-leverage field on the profile and most businesses pick the broad one.
Every service, filled
Google publishes predefined services per category. Filling them jumped from the 81st ranking factor to the 22nd in a year. We fill all of them, add custom ones where the list falls short, and price them where pricing helps.
Description and attributes
A 750-character description written for a person, not stuffed for a robot, because Google confirmed the description is not a ranking factor. Plus attributes: accessibility, payments, identity, and languages spoken, which powers the "Spanish-speaking" filter in Maps.
Photos that carry weight
A shoot list and upload to the 20 to 30 photo baseline, weighted toward staff-at-work and real job sites. Correctly sized, descriptively named. No stock, no AI fakes, and no geotagging, which does nothing since Google strips EXIF on upload.
A review engine, not a push
Your official Google review link and QR code, wired into a 24-hour ask that goes to every customer, not just the happy ones. Gating is banned and now carries FTC exposure of roughly $53,000 per violation. We build the compliant version.
Replies to the backlog
Every unanswered review gets a reply, in the language it was written in, naming the service and the city naturally. Response is a confirmed engagement signal and the backlog is usually months deep.
Hours, including the ones you forget
Regular hours plus special and holiday hours set ahead of time. "Open at the time of search" is the #5 ranking factor and wrong hours are a leading cause of one-star reviews.
NAP cleanup at the source
One spelling, one phone, one address across your site, your profile, and the listings that matter. Ten authoritative citations beat fifty thin ones, so this is cleanup work, not a volume contest.
Tracking you can actually read
Every profile link UTM-tagged and landing in GA4 as GBP traffic instead of being dumped into Direct. Key events set for calls, forms and bookings, so the profile is judged on booked work.
FAQ moved onto your site
Google removed the Q&A section from profiles in December 2025. The answers now come from "Ask Maps," which reads your site. We move your FAQs onto a real page with FAQ schema so the AI has something correct to read.
Compliance sweep
Name spam, duplicate listings, address problems and gating are the four things that get profiles suspended. About 42% of suspensions trace to address verification and 28% to the business name. We check all of it before Google does.
A before and after you can keep
Screenshots of every field we changed, the categories we chose and why, and your baseline map positions. If you ever leave, the work stays yours and documented.
Signal and noise
Half of what agencies bill for was tested and found to do nothing
These are not opinions. Each one below is a controlled test or a direct statement from Google, and each one is still being sold as a monthly line item somewhere.
Moves your ranking
- Primary category (the #1 individual factor)
- Keywords in the business name (#3, and the reason it gets abused)
- Open at the time of search (#5)
- Additional categories (#8)
- Recency of reviews (#11), so a steady drip beats one big push
- Predefined services, which moved from #81 to #22 this year
Individual factor ranks from Whitespark's 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey (47 experts, 187 factors). Expert consensus, not a Google figure.
Does not, and was tested
- Posting to rank A nine-week Sterling Sky study across 441 keywords found zero ranking movement. Posts are a conversion and freshness lever, not a ranking one.
- Keyword-stuffing the description Google has confirmed the description is not a ranking factor.
- Geotagging your photos Google strips EXIF metadata on upload. The tactic does literally nothing.
- Adding 30 service-area cities Whitespark ran a controlled test. Defined service areas do not lift Maps rankings; Google ranks you from your verified address.
- Buying citations by the hundred Consistency beats volume. Fifty sloppy listings are worse than ten accurate ones.
Where map pack weight actually sits
Whitespark 2026, by category. Your profile is the largest single block, which is why a $650 pass at it is usually the cheapest ranking you will ever buy.
- Google Business Profile 32%
- Reviews 20%
- On-page (your website) 15%
- Engagement signals 9%
- Links 8%
- Listings & citations 6%
- Social 5%
Two ways to buy it
One fixes the foundation. The other is what makes it compound. Most businesses start with the first and decide about the second once they can see the map move. Both check out through Shopify.

In-depth optimization
$650 once, not a retainer
Every field on the profile, done properly, with the tracking and the compliance check that nobody includes. Turnaround is about two weeks, most of it waiting on photos from you.
- Full competitor category teardown, then the narrowest accurate primary
- Every predefined service filled in, plus custom services
- Description, attributes, languages spoken, hours and holiday hours
- 20 to 30 photos sourced, sized, named and uploaded
- Official review link and QR, plus the 24-hour ask that goes to everyone
- Replies written for your entire unanswered review backlog
- NAP reconciled across your site, your profile and the listings that count
- UTM tagging and GA4 key events so calls and bookings are attributable
- FAQs migrated onto your website with FAQ schema for Ask Maps
- Compliance sweep: name, duplicates, address, gating
- Before and after documentation, plus your baseline map positions
Keep it moving
Content and ranking plan
$550 per month
A one-time pass gets the profile right. Ranking for the searches that bring work takes content aimed at researched keywords, published steadily, with the reviews and posts that keep you from going stale.
- Keyword research every month against real volume and difficulty, not guesses
- Content written for the terms that can actually be won, on your site
- A weekly profile post with a real offer or update behind it
- Fresh photos monthly, weekly if your market is competitive
- The review engine kept running, with replies inside 24 to 48 hours
- Geo-grid rank tracking, so you see position by neighborhood and not an average
- A monthly report in calls, direction requests and booked work
A profile that goes dark for 30 or more days starts dropping out of AI answers and discovery. That is the case for the monthly plan, and it is also the reason we will not sell it to you before the $650 pass is done.
Before you spend anything
Get the in-depth analysis free. It goes further than our own tool.
We built a free instant scan of your Google Business Profile and it is genuinely useful, but it is a machine looking at one profile in thirty seconds. The in-depth analysis is a person going through your profile, your site, your reviews, your listings and your live map positions against your three closest competitors, then writing down what to fix and in what order. It costs nothing and there is no obligation attached to it.

What the first 90 days look like
In this order, because the cheapest wins come first and the compounding ones only work once the foundation is right.
Foundation and safety
Verification confirmed, category set, every field completed, NAP conflicts killed, and any non-compliant review practice stopped that day. The fastest movement on the map usually happens here, and it costs nothing but attention.
Content and tracking
Photos uploaded, the review link and QR live, the backlog answered, links UTM-tagged and reporting into GA4, weekly posts started, and your FAQs moved onto the site with schema.
Authority and compounding
Local citations and links, LocalBusiness schema, real pages per service and city, Spanish pages where the market calls for it, and geo-grid tracking so the next decision comes from data.
Questions worth asking
How much does Google Business Profile optimization cost?
Ours is $650 one time for the in-depth optimization: categories, services, description, attributes, photos, hours, the review engine, NAP cleanup, tracking and the compliance sweep, documented before and after. If you want the work to keep compounding after that, the ongoing plan is $550 a month, which is content built on researched keywords plus the posting, photos, reviews and rank tracking that keep the profile from going stale.
How long does it take to see results?
Profile changes can move map positions within two to four weeks, because the map pack updates quickly and most of the gap is unfilled fields. Reviews and content compound over a few months. Anyone promising the top of the map in 30 days is either buying ads or guessing.
What is the difference between GMB optimization and Google Business Profile optimization?
Nothing but the name. Google My Business was renamed Google Business Profile in 2021, the standalone app was sunset and the old dashboard was retired in 2025. If a provider is still selling "GMB optimization" and telling you to log into the dashboard, ask when they last did this work.
Can I just do this myself?
Yes, and the checklist on this page is the real one, not a teaser. What people miss is not the effort, it is the specifics: which of the 4,000 plus categories is narrowest and still accurate, which predefined services Google publishes for it, and which of the popular tactics were debunked by controlled tests. Most DIY profiles we look at are 60% complete and carrying at least one thing that risks a suspension.
Will you put keywords in my business name to rank faster?
No. Keywords in the name are the #3 ranking factor, which is exactly why the tactic is abused, reportable and suspendable. About 28% of suspended profiles trace to a business name issue. If you want keywords in your name the compliant route is a real rebrand or a registered DBA, and we will tell you that instead.
My profile was suspended. Can you help?
Usually. The order matters: fix the specific violation first, then appeal once with full evidence, and never create a duplicate while the review is open. The evidence form has a 60-minute timer once you open it, so everything (dated photos with signage, a utility bill or lease, your license) has to be ready first. Most legitimate cases come back within one to three weeks.
Do Google posts actually help me rank?
Not directly. Sterling Sky ran a nine-week study across 441 keywords and found no ranking movement. Posts still earn their place: they lift click-through, they signal an actively managed profile, and freshness feeds the AI answers people now read first. We post weekly for those reasons, not because we are pretending it ranks you.
Do you handle Spanish?
Yes, written natively rather than machine-translated. That covers your description, your posts, your review replies in the language each review was left in, and the "languages spoken" attribute that puts you in the Spanish filter on Maps. In Monterey County that decides whether a large share of the market can read you at all.
Do you work with businesses outside Monterey County?
Yes. The local work is Salinas and Monterey County, but profile optimization is the same discipline anywhere and all of it is done remotely. The one thing we cannot change for you is proximity to the searcher, and that is true wherever you are.
Where these numbers come from
Ranking weights and individual factor ranks are from Whitespark's 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors report (Darren Shaw, published November 6, 2025; 47 experts, 187 factors). It is an expert survey, not a Google figure, so treat it as directional. The posts study is Sterling Sky's nine-week test across 441 keywords. Suspension breakdowns are Sterling Sky's data on suspended profiles. The statement that the business description is not a ranking factor, and that EXIF data is stripped on upload, come from Google. The Q&A section removal (API off November 3, 2025, public rollout from December 3, 2025) and the official review link and QR documentation (December 31, 2025) are Google product changes. FTC penalty amounts are from the Consumer Review Rule, effective October 21, 2024. Numbers are here to inform, not to promise a specific result for any one business.
